As
we become increasingly aware of the various hidden forms of toxins and chemicals infiltrating our lives and building up within
our bodies, we seek healthier, natural alternatives to the everyday choices that we make. Yet, how can we know for certain
that these supposed "natural alternatives" are really any healthier for us? Here is the low down on the current
state of affairs in the Mineral Makeup department.
With nearly every mainstream cosmetic company jumping on the mineral makeup bandwagon,
it is easy to see how people may be skeptical of mineral cosmetic's "claim to fame", that being said, mineral cosmetics
are healthy for your skin, and offer a range of nourishing benefits, particularly for the skin that is prone to acne,
rosacea, or sensitive skin problems. Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Could there really be a cosmetic that
actually provides benefits to your skin with regular use. There have been many articles written to that end of skepticism.
In fact, many have tried what they believe to be mineral cosmetics, based on the products packaging and advertising, yet they
have seen no difference in their skin, or worse than that, they have suffered from skin issues as a RESULT of using these
"mineral cosmetics". That is becaue these products are not PURE minerals, they still contain the harsh chemicals
used to preserve and bind the ingredients together.
However, a closer look into the ingredients list of
most widely known cosmetic companies claiming to sell mineral cosmetics, reveals only traces of truly beneficial and nourishing
minerals, while the bulk of the ingredient list is filled with traditional makeup ingredients, such as:
- Talc (a mineral with chemical properties similar to asbestos!)
- Bismuth Oxycloride, Synthetic Preservatives
(such as parabens and urea!)
- Fragrance
and perfume (causes skin irritation)
As there is currently no regulation for cosmetic companies in what
"qualifies" as mineral cosmetics, nor in the concentration of many traditional makeup ingredients, long known to
be skin irritants, any makeup company can throw in trace amounts of beneficial minerals (and you can bet they are not high
quality, either!) fill in the gaps with cheap and traditional chemicals and synthetics, and still place their product on the
market with advertising claiming it to be "natural mineral cosmetics".
Armed with that knowlege, we have noted the importance of reading a cosmetic
brand's ingredient list. An ingredient list that contains ANY amount of Talc, Bismuth Oxycloride, Synthetic Colors, or
Synthetic Preservatives, is very likely NOT selling a truly natural and safe mineral cosmetic, and hence, the benefits of
these "minerals" will be slight, if at all.
